Commissioners deny variance for development of RV park

Incomplete construction disqualifies park as ‘existing’ site

In a split vote, Macon County Board of Commissioners refused a variance for an RV park expansion in a newly defined floodway – a decision taking a hard line stance on ordinance enforcement versus private property rights.
Mike Calafiore bought the Old Mill Campground in Otto in 2006 with plans to expand the development, adding 13 to 14 RV sites along the river. After a countywide July 2007 moratorium, issuance of new flood insurance maps by the Federal Emergency Management Association in November of that year and the revision of the county flood ordinance in February – Calafiore’s investment is a wash.
