LTWA Landslide Flight a Big Success

Landslide Flight held in Partnership with SouthWings
On Friday, February 12th, we partnered with southwings to offer Planning Board members, Slope Development Committee Members, Commissioners and County Officials the chance to view the recent landslides in Macon County from above.
Southwings is a conservation and public benefit aviation non-profit that provides skilled pilots and aerial education to enhance conservation efforts across the Southeast. This service was provided free to LTWA in order to help us achieve our mission of protecting and restoring the Little Tennessee River Watershed.

The slide pictured above is the largest recent slide, located in the Wildflower development.
Approximately 14 people flew in a series of 3 flights. While participants waited on the ground for thier turn to fly, a presentation was given about slope failure and hazards by Rick Wooten of the NC Geological Survey and Josh Pope of the Macon County GIS Department.
The Franklin Press published a very detailed article about the flights in the February 17th edition. You must be an e-subscriber to read the full article online. Read the full Smoky Mountain Times article here.
