Canoe Clean Up Event

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Join the Little Tennessee Watershed Association for their annual river clean up day from 9 am – 1 pm on Friday, August 7th, 2009.

We will launch several groups of boats on various short sections of the river for trash pick up, and volunteers will be shuttled back to their vehicles when the trip is complete.  Each section will be about a two hour float and the entire event is from 9 am to 1 pm.  Shuttles will be provided, but bring your own lunch and water.

If you are interested in participating, but do not have your own boat, a limited number of canoes and kayaks will be available free of charge courtesy of the Great Smoky Mountain Fish Camp.

This is a free event, but volunteers are asked to RSVP so that boats and partners can be arranged. For directions or to RSVP, call the Little Tennessee Watershed Association at 828-369-6402 or email info [at - replace with symbol] ltwa [dot] org.

Each year, LTWA hosts a kickoff clean up for the Big Sweep littler-free waterways initiative (www.ncbigsweep.org) that occurs in October. Last year, our members and volunteers contributed over 500 pounds of trash to the total for Macon County. Let’s make this year even better!

LT river cleanup

Hi, I took my daughter during spring break to bike the Greenway in Franklin- which was awesome- but we were pretty dismayed at the state of all the river garbage along the banks!! We've had several floods since the Fall of 09, and lots of snow melt this winter, so we realize the rivers had to be at capacity or over-the-banks a lot this year thus far. WE WOULD LIKE TO ORGANIZE A CLEAN-UP DAY ASAP!! WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP US?? My daughter is 9, and as we rode along and discussed ways we could help clean the river, she coined the phrase 'shouldn't the Greenway be the Clean-way?'... I thought this was an awesome motivator, and started making calls to folks I know around the county, before I discovered your site. Sooo, long story shorter, WE WANT TO HELP! I am a sales rep in the outdoor business for Patagonia and this sort of thing is what we do best in community outreach. We live in Franklin, know lots of people with boats, and I know just about every outdoor store owenership in the entire Southeast, so should be able to help spread the word. We can help organize, lead, follow, whatever. Please contact me ASAP and let's get something in the works for later this month or early May... October is much too late!!
