Celebrate Earth Day with LTWA and Main Street Coffee!
On April 22, 2010, at Main Street Coffee and Tea in Franklin, NC join the Little Tennessee Watershed Association (LTWA) as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day .
Main Street Coffee and Tea is located at 26 E. Main in downtown Franklin. Owner Sandy Pantaleo proudly serves organic, shade grown fair trade coffee provided by Counter Culture - another great team for a healthy environment.
For this Earth Day event, thanks to the generous donation of Main Street Coffee, Sandy will give free house coffee to anyone who brings in or purchases a re-usable mug – one more way to lighten the landfill load.
LTWA will be supporting this effort to reduce waste with the sale of their re-usable coffee mugs that feature a stainless steel lining to keep your coffee hot and LTWA’s river otter logo designed by local wildlife artist John Sill.
Here are some eye-opening facts about disposable coffee cups:
- Disposable paper coffee cups aren’t made from recycled paper. Instead, most cups are manufactured using 100% bleached virgin paperboard.
- In 2006, it is estimated that paper cups accounted for 252 million pounds of garbage resting in landfills. Paper cups used in 2006 also accounted for 4 billion gallons of water wasted, 6.5 million trees cut down, and 4,884 billion BTU’s of energy used.
- According to Starbucks, if 50 customers at each location used reusable mugs, we would save 150,000 cups per day, reducing waste by 1.7 million pounds of paper per year!
